Gordon McInnes
Director
BEng (Hons), CEng, MIET

Gordon studied Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Strathclyde University. Gordon joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 1988 and was appointed Director in 1999.

Originally based in the Glasgow Head Office, Gordon transferred to London in 1992 and has successfully led the Hulley & Kirkwood Design Team in complex M&E services projects for works at Heathrow & Gatwick Airports, London City Centre commercial offices and mixed use developments, as well as complex retail/shopping centre projects and leisure/sports centres.

Gordon is a Board Director based in our Epsom office and responsible for the delivery of projects in London and the surrounding areas, including the agreement of fees, appointments, scope of works and ensuring resources are available to fulfil our obligations and client expectations. 

Gordon also currently sits on the Exec Board of H&K helping to steer the Business on Strategic Operational issues in the London area and in the South of England.

 
 

Jim Costello
Director
BSc (Hons), CEng, MCIBSE, MEI

Jim studied Environmental Engineering at Strathclyde University. He joined Hulley & Kirkwood in Glasgow in 1985, was appointed Director in 1993 and assisted in establishing the Firm in and around the London area.

In his years with Hulley & Kirkwood, Jim has gained vast experience throughout all the various sectors of the industry from industrial to commercial, retail, mixed use, healthcare and in more recent years, in the education sector within which he has been instrumental in developing our strategy for the concept, design management, M&E procurement method and delivery of over £6.5Bn worth of successfully delivered projects.

With such a wealth of experience in the industry from time spent in our London, Birmingham and Glasgow Head Office, he brings leadership on all aspects related to M&E issues with a no nonsense pro-active approach.

Jim also currently Chairs the Exec Board of H&K helping to steer the Business on all Strategic issues. 

Michael O'Donnell
Director
BEng (Hons), MCIBSE, CEng, LCEA

Michael studied Mechanical Engineering at Strathclyde University in Glasgow. Michael joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 1989 and was appointed Regional Director in 2002, followed by Director in 2006.  

Michael is a Director in our Edinburgh office and has been Team Leader for a number of major high profile projects with extensive experience in all sectors of the industry. Michael provides design leadership on low carbon / low energy design strategies along with the HulleyECO team.

Michael has a passion to deliver low energy and low carbon design solutions and has demonstrated this in further and higher education sectors, high tech laboratory sector and more recently the Healthcare sector, where he led the award winning £170m Fife Acute facility on the Victoria Hospital site in Kirkcaldy.

Michael also currently sits on the Exec Board of H&K helping to steer the Business on all Strategic Operational issues in Scotland and in the North of England.

Donald Wood
Director
MSc, BSc, CEng, MIMechE

Donald studied Mechanical Engineering and Building Services Design at Glasgow University. He joined Hulley & Kirkwood’s Glasgow office in 1993 and was appointed Director in 2006.  

Donald has extensive experience as lead Director in all sectors and leads on conceptual design and management of project delivery including client liaison.

Donald also brings expertise in sustainable, low energy and low carbon emission design. He has demonstrated through managing the application of building physics modelling techniques that a holistic and collaborative design approach provides real benefits to the project. Recent projects have included innovative engineering solutions including biomass boiler plant, combined heat and power and tri-generation.

Donald is experienced in major scale multiple building healthcare and education campus type projects through delivery of major PPP schemes UK wide. He has also undertaken major projects for research and laboratory accommodation, cleanroom and manufacturing facilities, as well as commercial office developments. 

 
 
 
 

Stephen McKinlay
Director
BEng (Hons)

Stephen has been involved over the years with Hulley & Kirkwood as Project Leader on many projects multi and various in nature. 

Stephen works as a Team Leader within Hulley & Kirkwood and provides an enthusiastic and refreshing pro-active approach to problem solving on M&E issues, which has resulted in a great deal of repeat business from many clients over the years.

He has also helped develop our business in the stadia/exhibition centre field where safety systems and large public areas are involved.

Stephen has a keen interest in sustainable design and is heavily involved in our simulation work for projects, ensuring that projects are considered at conception to ensure passive sustainability is an integral part of the building design.

He also has a keen interest in developing Engineering Standards within the company and plays a key role in this respect across all UK offices.

 
 

Nigel Yemm
Director
BEng (Hons), CEng, MCIBSE

Nigel studied Building Services Engineering at the University of Central Lancashire. Nigel joined Hulley & Kirkwood’s Birmingham office in 1994 before becoming the founder of our Bristol office in 2000. Nigel was appointed Regional Director in 2001, followed by Director in 2006.  

Since joining Hulley & Kirkwood, Nigel has been involved with the design and construction of major projects in all market sectors.

Nigel has a keen interest in the development of low energy design within all projects. As a consequence, he takes an active role in the decision making process through the concept design stages in order to ensure that the final servicing strategy exploits all opportunities to save energy whilst delivering a comfortable and functional environment.

Nigel has a lead role within the Bristol office and is responsible for the day to day management of all aspects of the business in the South West of England, including Board responsibility for the Plymouth office. 

 
 

David Stewart
Director
BEng (Hons), CEng, MIET, ACIBSE

David is a Director in our Edinburgh office with 30 years’ experience in the construction industry. Prior to joining Hulley & Kirkwood in 1990, he worked for a National Engineering Contractor where he gained experience on a variety of projects including a new district general hospital in West Lothian, various primary and secondary school refurbishments and a new build residential development in Edinburgh.

David has been Team Leader for many projects across all sectors of the construction industry with responsibility for the design and specification of electrical services, including high-voltage and low-voltage distribution systems, emergency power systems, fire and voice alarm systems, specialist lighting, ICT networks, complex control and life safety systems.

Through his involvement at the Quartermile development in Edinburgh where David has been Project Director for Hulley & Kirkwood, he has gained valuable experience in large scale residential, commercial offices and leisure facilities. He has also led our team on the delivery of the main infrastructure services on the site.

 
 

Peter Metcalf
Manchester Director
BEng (Hons), CEng, MCIBSE, MIET

Peter is a Director with over 25 years’ experience in the Building Services Industry. His career began in electrical installation contracting and has seen him working on commercial, industrial and pharmaceutical projects.

He joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 1999 when we opened our Manchester office, and in his time with the company Peter has been involved with the design and construction of a wide variety of projects in all market sectors.

Peter has provided both design and construction consultancy in addition to project management roles for our clients, and he continues to support our engineering staff with this and in the production of due diligence surveying and reporting.

Peter is determined to deliver a high quality service to his clients and play an active supporting role to his design team counterparts. He is committed to providing his team with opportunities that develop their expertise and ensure Hulley & Kirkwood remain a strong and valued contributor to all their projects. 

 
 

Justin Lees
Plymouth Director
BEng (Hons), CEng, FCIBSE, MASHRAE, FFB

Justin undertook a Building Environmental Engineering Honours Degree at the University of Bath. He joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 2008 as an Associate to open the Plymouth office, serving Devon and Cornwall and the outlying Islands.

Justin was promoted to Director in 2011 and is responsible for the day to day operation of the Plymouth office, including business expansion, resourcing, and marketing.

Justin firmly believes in promoting the industry in the region and sits on the Devon Forum of the Built Environment Committee and, as a Fellow of CIBSE, also sits on the CIBSE Peninsula Committee, where he assists with the organising of educational events for the Devon and Cornwall region. 

 
 
 

Alan O'Rourke
Defence Director
BEng (Hons), CEng, MCIBSE, LCEA

As a Director within the Practice, Alan has taken the role as Team Leader on many schemes and brings the unusual trait of being both an Electrical and Mechanical Engineer.

Alan has been involved in a wide range of projects which have utilised both disciplines including schools, major office fit-outs and hospitals and currently is the Director responsible for heading our Defence Estates portfolio.

Alan also attained a post-graduated Masters in Construction Law.

 
 

Steven Agnew
Birmingham Director
BEng(Hons), CEng, MCIBSE
Birmingham

Steve has over 25 years’ experience in building services design and joined Hulley & Kirkwood in 1990.  He was part of the team which set up our Birmingham office in that year and has now returned as Director of the Birmingham office after nearly a decade working abroad in Australia.

Steve has worked on some of the key projects in our West Midlands portfolio, including the National Exhibition Centre and Birmingham Airport. He also has considerable experience in commercial, industrial and defence projects and has a strong reputation, in particular, for work in the healthcare and education sectors.

Among Steve’s key skills are assisting clients with project briefing and risk management, design leadership throughout the life of the project (especially on complex projects where multidisciplinary coordination is required), contract responsibilities and technical leadership with a particular focus on mechanical services.

Allan West
Technical Director

Glasgow

Allan studied at Glasgow Caledonian University receiving his BEng (Hons) in Building Services Engineering and thereafter continued his education with Brunel University in London, gaining his MSc in Building Services Engineering. He joined the Glasgow office of Hulley & Kirkwood in 1997 as an Engineer and progressed naturally through the business, being promoted to Associate in 2004 and more recently, Technical Director in 2017, thereby broadening his responsibilities to more strategic technical and business focussed activities.

Allan has been involved to a varying degree in most sectors of the Construction Industry in Mechanical Building Services Design including Higher Education, Healthcare, Retail, Education, Residential, Leisure, MOD/Government Agency, Commercial and Industrial.

Allan has a wealth of experience in mechanical services designs for buildings with highly serviced or complex design requirements, having successfully led many of the large, complex and prestigious projects that have been designed and delivered by the Glasgow office. His attention to detail, problem solving and collaborative working abilities are broadly regarded as key assets.

Allan attained chartered status and corporate membership of CIBSE in 2014.

Tim Crocombe
Technical Director
BEng (Hons), CEng, MCIBSE, MIET
Bristol

Tim studied Building Services Engineering at the University of Hertfordshire, Hatfield Campus. Tim joined Hulley & Kirkwood’s Bristol office in 2003 as a Senior Engineer, before being promoted to Associate and later Technical Director in 2017.

Tim has been involved with the design and construction of major projects in all market sectors, as well as providing expert advice on all types of reporting including feasibility, dilapidations, pre-acquisitions and planned maintenance schedules.

Tim has a lead role within the South West of England and Wales and is responsible for the day to day resourcing, technical appraisal, marketing and management of key clients throughout the area.
