Life at Hulley's
Be inspired by some of our colleagues
We strongly believe that our people are our business; our aim is to be the employer of choice in our industry, but don't take our word for it - be inspired by some of our colleagues.
Eleni Kalyva, Senior Sustainability Engineer
“Starting work with Hulley & Kirkwood as a Graduate Engineer in 2013, I received continuous training support and opportunities which enabled me to acquire qualifications such as CIBSE Low Carbon Energy Assessor, CIBSE Low Carbon Consultant, BREEAM UK New Construction Assessor, WELL AP and CDM Principal Designer. These coupled with being surrounded by experienced engineers and exposed to leading projects from a vast range of building sizes and types gave me the required skills and confidence to become a rounded Senior Sustainability Engineer. At Hulley & Kirkwood I feel a valued member of a team where I can constantly keep on advancing my career to the next level, while being in a relaxed and positive environment which promotes ‘people oriented’ culture."
Andrew Sturrock, Associate
“During my 12 years with Hulley & Kirkwood I have progressed from Graduate to Associate. I was presented with opportunities early in my career to take responsibility for the design and management of projects; these opportunities, along with the support received from my colleagues, helped me to achieve CEng status early in 2013. I believe that working within an organisation like Hulley & Kirkwood, which is owner managed, allows for greater opportunities for progression and development."
Steven McKinlay, Graduate Engineer
“After spending a year at University on a course, which I wasn’t very keen on, I decided to change my degree and take up something I had spent almost all of my life around, the World of Engineering. I joined the Building Services Engineering course at Glasgow Caledonian University, where I gained extremely useful skills, not just within the given industry but also life skills as well. From my first year to my last year on the degree, I would go on placement at Hulley & Kirkwood Glasgow office during the summer to further enhance my abilities, knowledge and understanding. This is definitely something I achieved and I was given the opportunity to work full time for the company as a Graduate Electrical Engineer once I had completed my studies. It has been six months since I started and being heavily involved in the Engineering industry has been very exciting as new, unique projects are opening up almost every day. In my short time here, I have worked on hospitals, schools, hotels and residential homes, each offering their own different challenges. Through working in tandem with my own Electrical Team and other Mechanical Engineers, my engineering abilities have grown, as well as my confidence, with their help and guidance."
Auorla Taylor-Phelps, Student Engineer
“Throughout my academic years, I was drawn to the exciting world of Engineering and Mathematics. I loved that feeling of solving a puzzle that others so easily gave up on and calculating an answer that fit perfectly to the situation. Both subjects gave me the opportunity to develop my skills and challenge myself to new tasks. A natural progression of this was to study Mechanical Engineering at University. I knew this was a male dominated industry, but fortunately I was encouraged by my family and peers, so I decided to take the leap. Although this was a nerve-racking step further into the real world, I learned that there are many more avenues that branch off from Mechanical Engineering, building services was one of them. During my time at Hulley & Kirkwood, I have been able to witness some great minds at work. One person in particular is the Senior Sustainability Engineer, who has extremely in-depth knowledge in the world of sustainability and renewable technologies. This level of understanding is a skill I aspire to achieve one day, which is encouraged daily from my peers who help challenge my understanding of engineering concepts."
