BSP Tower Hamlets Schools – Boner Primary

Case Studies

Project Title: BSP Tower Hamlets Schools – Boner Primary

Client: Tower Hamlets

Tower Hamlets has 98 schools with 37,500 pupils. As well as supporting these, the council provides a range of education and training related services aimed at improving skills and boosting achievements for all. Their primary schools continue to show some of the greatest improvements in England with their secondary schools also making dramatic progress.

To help maintain this progression, Tower Hamlets Council are committed to refurbishing and renewing some of their schools to help continue this improvement.

The design for Bonner Primary school was forward thinking and included passive stack - chimneys to help remove excess heat from the classrooms during the summer to help regulate classroom temperatures and provide suitable environmental conditions for users. HulleySIM investigated the environmental performance of the proposed passive stacks and quantified their effectiveness in providing sufficient air changes within the classrooms to limit maximum temperatures.

The main purpose of the simulation exercise was to provide indicative analysis of the environmental performance of the classrooms. The ventilation strategies in the main hall, performance of the library and the overheating possibility of the glazed upper corridor were also considered. This was done by analysing windows opening strategies and glazing construction types, each area was modelled and simulated under unventilated conditions and naturally ventilated conditions.
The analysis enabled the prediction of the required dimensions of the passive stack ducts and protrusion above the roof level, as well as the necessary areas of opening grills required at every level into the duct. Also provided by the simulation were the required window effective opening areas, both high and low level, to ensure compliance with Building Bulletin 87.
