Muckamore Abbey Hospital, N. Ireland

Government Agency

Project Title: Muckamore Abbey Hospital, N. Ireland

Client: North & West Belfast Health and Social Services Trust

Project Value: £8m

Hulley contact: Andy Bradley

Muckamore Abbey Hospital currently provides specialist facilities for in-patients with learning disabilities. The Trust has submitted a Business Case to the Department of Health for the overall continuing provision of specialist treatment services for people with a learning disability at Muckamore Abbey Hospital.

Currently there are 377 beds on the site and the long term strategy is for these beds to reduce to 115. The remaining beds and associated facilities to be housed in new accommodation. The first phase of the development has received approval and involves providing accommodation for an Assessment and Intensive Care Unit and a Forensic Unit. The Design Team had the task of providing welcoming, attractive internal and external spaces by using contemporary pieces of art/sculpture while not compromising the functionality of the site.
