Hulley & Kirkwood project scoops prestigious BCO Award

Quartermile One in Edinburgh has won the British Council for Offices Scottish Regional Award for Commercial Workplace at this week’s awards ceremony which took place at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London.
Quartermile One is part of the first phase of a £450m mixed-use scheme on the site of the former Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. It involved a high degree of risk as the location was not established for office use and faced stringent planning issues from its setting within a World Heritage Site.
Hulley & Kirkwood Consulting Engineers are delighted to have provided detailed mechanical and electrical services design and monitoring input on this prestigious project.
Hulley’s role included the design of M&E services and site infrastructure. HulleySIM, their simulation and modeling division, undertook a number of simulation studies in order to inform the design of the envelope and the most effective practical and commercially viable M&E HVAC solutions.

“Works on this project included simulation modeling for the whole site, sun path analysis to determine the exposure of each of the glass elevations to direct sunlight over the course of the year in order to determine the exact extent of high performance solar control glass required on each façade. Through the use of thermal modeling software we were able to conduct bulk air flow analysis to predict temperatures in order to select the optimum glazing type and ventilation strategy.
“As a result we have helped deliver a vibrant and striking glazed building with a carbon reduction profile consistent with current high standards of compliance.”
