St Austell Town Centre redevelopment recieved an 'Excellent' BREEAM rating

10.02.10

Hulley & Kirkwood are delighted to learn that one of their most prestigious projects in SW England has exceeded expectations and achieved a BREEAM rating of ‘Excellent’.

The St Austell Town Centre redevelopment, named ‘White River Place’, was originally predicted to receive a BREEAM rating of ‘Very Good’ but instead achieved a score of 74.16% and a rating of ‘Excellent’ - a real triumph with only a handful of the country’s retail schemes having reached this level.

It has become one of the most environmentally friendly developments in the country.

The £75M scheme, launched on 29th October 2009, was delivered on time and to budget and provides a modern retail and leisure hub set within traditional style streets that create a natural extension to the existing town centre. It has been designed with relaxed, open styling and contemporary architecture.

Spread over 5 acres, this mixed use development includes 14,400m² of retail space, restaurants and cafes, a 4-screen cinema, 69 homes and a 550 space underground car park.

The scheme was praised for using locally sourced materials, a high content of recycled material, minimising air and water pollution and for incorporating low energy technologies such as rain water harvesting systems. A substantial part of the scheme has a ‘living roof’ made from sedum to reflect St Austell’s position amid rolling hills and its close proximity to the Eden Project.

St Austell Town Centre will be a benchmark for quality town centre developments in Cornwall for many years to come.
