Small Animal Hospital shortlisted for ACE Award
03.03.10
H&K's innovative Small Animal Hospital project has been shortlisted for an ACE Engineering Excellence Award under the catagory of Building Services (Medium Firm). The Small Animal Hospital is an expert referral centre for the treatment of small animals based in Glasgow. This building’s great triumph is the unique and ingenious way it is designed to complement its surroundings. The rooftop ‘lantern’ and the boldly defined entrance ensures that this superb building declares its presence and scale. Winners are to be announced at a Gala Dinner on 14th April. This is the second year running Hulley & Kirkwood have been nominated in this catagory, scooping the award in 2009 with Hoddinott Hall.
The challenge was to create a large hospital building without compromising the beautiful green space of the Garscube Estate. The solution was to use the topography of the site, lift up the ground, peel off the grass and place the building underneath.
This is a highly complex work of architecture which sets new standards in the design of buildings for veterinary medicine.
