  • Commercial Project of the Year with a Value Over £5m - Help for Heroes Personal Recovery Centre

Marine Station, Plymouth University - £4m

H&K were appointed to provide mechanical and electrical design services and BREEAM consultancy for the new Marine Station by Balfour Beatty, on behalf of Plymouth University. The Marine Station is an energy efficient, sustainable, two storey building consisting of two zones.  To the north is an unheated space, proposed for stores and workshop use and to the south is the teaching block comprising of laboratories, changing and showering facilities, offices and teaching accommodation. The laboratories are provided with seawater distribution systems for teaching and research facilities.  The seawater extraction is derived from a local borehole with alternative inlet/bowser provision.  The system recovers seawater during use to minimise the extraction rate. Lighting systems comprise energy efficient luminaire solutions with all areas incorporating energy control measures. Primary heating is provided via CHP with roof mounted photovoltaics providing sustainable energy back to the buildings infrastructure.

Help for Heroes Personal Recovery Centre - £12m

H&K were appointed to provide mechanical and electrical design services on the Accommodation Building Personal Recovery Unit which is a 66 bed accommodation facility and  rehabilitation centre housing a 25m swimming pool, hydro pool, recovery and consulting rooms and Cafe Hero. The site is directly linked to Hasler Company, a company of Royal Marines set up to help injured servicemen recover, rehabilitate and reintegrate either back into full military life, or back to civilian life. The project utilised the latest low carbon technology to achieve the stringent environmental requirements laid down by the local authorities. These technologies included high efficiency ventilation heat recovery, ground source heat pumps and solar thermal collectors.

Exeter Mathematics School - £1m

H&K were mechanical & electrical services consultant for Kier Construction’s refurbishment of Rougemont House in association with Exeter College and the University of Exeter. The project consisted of refurbishing the existing building which has had many uses, including a private dwelling, museum and council offices.  The building is now a mathematics centre of excellence for gifted students and provides a full range of 6th form curricular activities. Key aspects to the project related to providing a sustainable, energy efficient building within the confines of a listed building in a conservation area.
