Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Birmingham
An acute hospital providing adult services to more than half a million patients every year.
Hulley & Kirkwood were employed by Balfour Beatty Construction/Engineering Services through Consort Healthcare to design the Mechanical, Electrical, Plumbing and Medical Gas Services for this £545m New Acute Facility and have been employed in this role from the initial invitation to tender to the current post occupancy evaluation period.
The 1231 bed teaching hospital provides a regional centre of clinical excellence and includes:
- An accident and emergency department
- Specialist burns and transplant wards
- Decontamination Suite
- Operating theatres
- Four separate specialist mental healthcare units (two off site)
Key elements of the Trust’s cardiology and endoscopy services transferred from the old Queen Elizabeth Hospital into QEHB, the largest hospital of its type in Europe.
It has 100 beds on its Critical Care Unit, the largest such unit in the world, 30 operating theatres and world-class centres for treating a wide range of conditions and diseases.
The hospital already treats all of Britain’s seriously injured military patients, is a national centre of organ transplant, cancer research and treatment and a regional centre for trauma burns and neurology.
