Birmingham International Airport

Successful redevelopment of an airport.

New International Pier - £45m

The construction of the New International Pier replaced the outdated existing facility and is 240m long over 3 levels providing circa 15,000m2 of floor space. The building has been designed to encompass the latest building regulations and innovative construction practises that meet the latest environmental standards and performance criteria. The facility provides air bridge service capability to all stands designed to accommodate the next generation of environmentally friendly, wide bodied aircraft, together with the larger aircraft that already use the airport.

Hulley & Kirkwood formed part of a successful team which were chosen to develop various design options to initially support funding and a detailed planning application. Subsequently, H&K took the scheme through to detailed design, providing at all levels, best value and flexibility in accordance with the client brief. An extensive review of sustainable solutions were reviewed for this project and incorporated within the building services design.

One Terminal Project - £13m

The “One Terminal Project” was a redevelopment to merge the airport's two terminals and its associated facilities into an enhanced single facility in order to improve the operational capabilities for passenger handling and the passenger experience.

The multi-phase project led to the development of a larger centralised passenger search security area incorporating the latest in “State of the Art” scanning and X-ray equipment. The development also significantly enhanced the airport’s retail capability, including a 20,000 sq.ft walk through World Duty Free store which was 50% larger than the previous offer. Whilst the store incorporates a ‘walkthrough’ layout for those passengers wishing to fast track to their gate, it also provided walkways to lead customers to distinct ‘boutique’ areas and bays which are occupied by the various brands. In addition three new fashion brands, Superdry, Next and JD Sports were created. These developments, together with the opening of Accessorize and the enlarged World Duty Free store, totally transformed the airport’s retail offer.

Hulley & Kirkwood undertook the detailed M&E Services design for this project, overcoming the challenge of integrating with existing systems, whilst maintaining operational services as part of a multi-phase project.

With the project budget in mind value engineering was undertaken as the scheme developed, consequently the scheme came back within the allocated budget when tendered by M&E Contractors.

Hangar and Workshop Facility - £6m

This was a new 3720m² (41,000 sq.ft) hangar, state-of-the-art maintenance facility which combined a commercial operations centre and aircraft sales suite for tenant Eurojet Aviation.

Hulley & Kirkwood were commissioned by Birmingham Airport as project managers, lead designers and technical advisors in the provision of M&E services infrastructure to this new development.

Services infrastructure provision required a detailed analysis of the services infrastructure to determine available services capacity provision to support the services demands of this project and service diversions to maintained Infrastructure.

Integration into existing system site wide networks for various systems was also undertaken to enable communication with the new development from the existing airport communications systems.

A high profile VIP lounge in conjunction with one of the world’s most prestigious airlines was completed as part of a ‘shell and core’ fit out of the new International Pier.
