Building Schools for the Future.
Saltley High School - £8m
An increase in the school role necessitated the need to refurbish and extend Saltley High School in Birmingham. The works necessitated detailed surveys of the existing building services to ensure the required expansion and development plan could be supported off the main infrastructure. Central plant was fully replaced and the works were undertaken to ensure the future lifecycle of the school could be maximised. Thermal modelling and simulation of the new ‘insertions’ were developed to maximise the additional class spaces without compromising the pedagogy of the existing school. The programme of works included a new £1.2m sports hall which is now handed over and playing a part in the wider community.
Park View School - £8m
Park View School extension and major refurbishment was part of the Wave 2 Birmingham BSF programme. Park View School is a collage of buildings dating from the 1960s, with various extensions added over the years. Many of the buildings were in poor condition and suffered from dangerous overcrowding in the corridors. The project involved the extension and remodelling of an existing secondary school, providing new sports facilities, a new entrance and circulation routes, extended dining facilities and upgraded teaching facilities. Hulley & Kirkwood undertook the detailed building services design for this project including acoustic support. The building services ensure a low energy solution whilst maximising indoor air quality through a combination of natural and mechanical ventilation.
