Forfar Community Campus
New state-of-the-art secondary school.
This new 16,000m2 community campus project will ultimately provide and feature high quality learning and community use spaces and facilities dedicated to vocational learning courses for up to 1270 pupils. The £37m teaching facilities will be split over three levels comprising ground, first and second floors and include; enhanced performance spaces such as theatre, drama studio, and leisure facilities. The use of these spaces will be shared between educational / school and requirements for local leisure users, as well as various local groups e.g. art / amateur drama society etc. In addition the campus will accommodate two swimming pools; one 5 lane 25 meter swimming pool which will accommodate competitive swimming events and one 10m pool with floating floor (to 3m deep), which will be suitable for learning and sub aqua diving classes. The leisure facility will also include a sauna, steam room, gym, fitness suite and games hall which will be run by Angus Leisure. An enhanced school library, digital suite and internet café will be accessible to the public.
The new community campus will be constructed within the existing school site while the school facility remains operational. Upon handover of the new facility, anticipated for January 2016, pupils and staff will then transfer to the new facility, allowing demolition of the existing high school building and therein the creation of the new all-weather sports pitch and car parking.
Hulley and Kirkwood undertook and assessed existing utility routes and in conjunction with the network provider developed a plan for the necessary diversion and reconnection of existing utility supplies e.g. power, gas, water and telecoms, to serve the new campus building.
The majority of teaching spaces within the building will be naturally ventilated, making use of single sided ventilation via windows and exposed concrete soffits utilising the thermal mass benefits and potential. The games / sports hall is to be naturally ventilated via ‘windcatcher’ roof terminals. Services within the classroom will be exposed, with coordinated heating via radiant panels, lighting, fire alarm, sprinkler etc. Services are zoned to suit building geometry and anticipated use for education, leisure, community, out of hours etc., with principle plant and services located and distributed to provide the most economical solution whilst allowing access for future maintenance.
During the design extensive studies were undertaken to determine the most suitable low zero carbon technology, and ultimately, natural gas fired combined heat & power unit rated at 100kWe was selected. Space within the site has been identified for potential biomass boiler plant, should this be an Angus Council requirement in the future. The inclusion of these features result in the building comfortably exceeding the statutory requirements set within the Technical Standards (2013), and achieving the EPC and BREEAM target for the building of ‘B’ and ‘Very Good’ respectively.
