Two-storey futuristic designed school.
Hulley and Kirkwood were appointed by MITIE Engineering to provide M&E design services for the new school at Efford in Plymouth. Valued at £7.6m the scheme combines two schools into one on the site of the old High Field School. High View Primary accommodates 335 children from 4 to 11, alongside a 36-place nursery and children's centre – the Dell Centre. The facilities include spacious and space-age new building designs to make learning a pleasure with a hall for sports, a studio and a performing arts hall, with changing rooms for community use, meeting rooms and a media suite.
Key design features include the use of wind catchers to exhaust air from the rear of the classrooms, sun tubes to provide additional natural light and ground source heat pumps providing heating via the under floor circuits.
Since opening, to great acclaim High View School has won the Abercrombie Award for Best Sustainable Development and Forum of the Built Environment, Building of the Year Award.
