Western General Hospital, Linac & Admin Facility

The new Linac & Admin Facility at Western General Hospital, Edinburgh features new radiation shielded linac bunkers and oncology administration offices. The new Linac & Admin Facility is one of a number of projects at the Western General Hospital procured via HFS Framework Scotland. Hulley & Kirkwood were appointed to provide a range of MEP detail design and consultancy services.

The new facility was designed in compliance with SHTM design standards. Specialist healthcare services also included piped medical gases and supplies to linac equipment. The collaborative design process utilised BIM Level 2 protocols to develop the coordinated building information model, drawings and associated data.

Major infrastructure diversions including steam main, power and data were required as enabling works for the project. The building is connected to the new district heating network, an ongoing infrastructure project which will provide the site with future low carbon heating via a new energy centre. The remaining services were designed to integrate into the existing site infrastructure; LV supply, standby generation and piped medical gases, with these enabling diversions, adaptions and connections coordinated to support service continuity for the live hospital site.

Dynamic simulation modelling was used to inform the design of the energy strategy and to ensure comfort conditions. A VRF heat-pump system was utilised for heating and cooling providing environmental temperature control and enhanced conditions within the offices.

Overview:

  • SHTM compliant design.

  • Enhanced comfort conditions.

  • Integration into new district energy network.

  • BIM Level 2 delivery.

Awards:

  • Silver Award for Health Building or Project at the Scottish Design Awards 2023.
