Further & Higher Education, Residential

City of Glasgow College - Riverside Halls of Residence

We were part of the Glasgow Learning Quarter Consortium professional team that have now delivered the City of Glasgow College, new Riverside Campus and associated Halls of Residence.

The Riverside Campus comprises the main educational accommodation for the faculties of nautical studies and engineering / energy. Integral to the Riverside Campus are the new Halls of Residence.

The provision for student accommodation at this particular campus is amplified by the nature of the educational courses on offer which attract students, from not only countrywide, but also worldwide.

The Halls are designed as a tower with an approximate GIFA of 5,800m² housing 200 study bedrooms within ten suspended storeys  over a ground floor accommodating a common room, reception, central laundry, reception, plant and offices.

Each suspended floor provides high-quality self-catered accommodation, arranged in flats (x4) which typically provide 5 single study bedrooms, each with its own en-suite. Each flat has its own living space complete with shared kitchen. There are a small number of shared rooms and those designed specifically for students with mobility problems.

We were responsible for the full technical design of the MEP services including mechanical ventilation, space heating, DX ICT cooling, public health, electrical power, artificial lighting, fire alarms ICT, BEMS and vertical transportation.

Along with the project architects, we employed the use of Autodesk Revit and BIM images to specifically generate fully elevated rooms layouts that supported the contractor as well as providing a valuable resource for client approval and coordination work-streams.

The MEP design for the Halls fully embraces a low energy/carbon ethos. Key examples being;

  • Variable volume air systems (occupancy led).

  • Variable volume water systems.

  • Rooftop photovoltaics.

  • Biodiesel CHP.

  • Energy/heat metering.

The building has been formally assessed under BREEAM 2011 (multi-residential), achieving a ‘Very Good’ rating for the design stage.
