We’re delighted to share the completion of our role on the Maesgwyn School extension in Wales, a £1.5m project that Hulley & Kirkwood have been involved with since June 2023, which was successfully delivered ahead of the new academic year in Summer.
Hulley & Kirkwood provided the full MEP design for three new classrooms and associated support spaces, including the integration of specialist SEN facilities such as a sensory room. The design focused on creating flexible, accessible learning environments, tailored to support pupils with additional learning needs while providing comfortable and practical spaces for staff.
The project included a low-carbon heating solution integrated with the existing systems and aligned with Welsh Government decarbonisation targets, alongside a combined natural and mechanical ventilation strategy in line with BB101 to maintain high indoor air quality. Lighting was designed to LG7 standards, with ASD-friendly, low-glare schemes to support a calm and supportive learning environment.
Power, data, safety and security systems were carefully coordinated to support modern teaching methods, assistive technologies and statutory compliance, with all services fully integrated into the school’s existing Building Management System (BMS).
Despite tight timescales and the technical challenges, the project was completed on programme and it’s been particularly rewarding to now see teachers and pupils enjoying the new spaces.
A great example of collaborative working with Alwyn Jones Architects, Bruton Knowles, and Rhondda Cynon Taf Council.
