When people think about Defence Infrastructure, accommodation isn't usually the first thing that comes to mind.
Yet from an engineering perspective, military accommodation projects can be some of the most complex environments to deliver successfully.
As part of the wider development of RAF Lossiemouth, H&K were privileged to provide detailed design and construction support for seven new Single Living Accommodation blocks, a Hub facility and associated infrastructure upgrades.
The development delivered 426 ensuite bedrooms alongside catering, meeting and social spaces, creating a modern environment to support service personnel living and working on the base.
One of the most interesting aspects of the project was the approach to delivery.
Five of the accommodation blocks were manufactured off-site and arrived largely complete, with only final service connections, testing and commissioning undertaken on site. This helped improve quality, reduce programme pressures and simplify logistics on a live operational base.
From a building services perspective, projects like these require careful coordination of mechanical, electrical and public health systems across multiple buildings, while ensuring reliability, maintainability and long-term performance.
Alongside the accommodation blocks, the development also included a new Hub facility and local infrastructure upgrades, including EV charging provision, supporting the continued growth and modernisation of RAF Lossiemouth.
Whilst operational facilities often receive the spotlight, projects such as these demonstrate the important role engineering plays in creating environments that support the day-to-day lives of those who serve.
